Nazarene Missional Church Assessment

Welcome to the Nazarene Missional Church Assessment (NMCA) website. The NMCA is designed for Nazarene district superintendents to help local churches assess their current ministry, and provide perspective for the task of creating a church action plan.

The NMCA is designed primarily for churches with 150 or less in average worship attendance. While churches of any size are welcome to utilize the NMCA, the length of the survey and the fact that sampling is not recommended increases the difficulty for large churches to complete the survey efficiently.

The survey is comprehensive, can be completed with no cost to the church or district (optional survey scanning is $0.50/survey), and includes questions concerning alignment with the mission and message of the Church of the Nazarene. A 27-page report with graphs and discussion questions helps analyze the data.

With district support, the local church should use the NMC Report to develop a church action plan. The completion of a church action plan, and its submission to the district superintendent, fulfills Manual paragraphs 121 and 129.4.

Step 1: District/Local Church Agreement

It is the responsibility of the district office to recruit local churches to use the NMCA. The USA/Canada Mission/Evangelism Department (UCME) will not provide surveys or process a report to any local church without consent from the district superintendent.

Step 2: Getting the NMC Surveys

The district office must get the NMC Surveys from the UCME department. The reason for this is two-fold: 1) The UCME scanner is calibrated for the surveys we provide. Copies may not properly align. 2) UCME creates an account for each church that will be taking the NMC Survey. This account is used for tracking purposes and to begin a feedback loop used for improving the survey, report and process.

Step 3: Completing the Surveys
Have everyone in the church age 15 or older complete a survey. Please do not try picking a sample of people only. The following page provides further instructions: “Instructions for Nazarene Missional Church Survey.”
Step 4: Entering the Survey Data

There are currently two ways to have your survey data entered:

  1. By going to the following online data entry screen and having someone in the church or district office enter each survey: NMCA Online Data Entry. This option is free and requires the same Church Number Code to be entered for each survey.
  2. Having the Nazarene Research Center scan your surveys. This option will result in a $0.50/survey charge. Scholarships are available to cover this charge.
Instructions for data entry are found on the following page: “Instructions for NMC Survey Data Entry.”
Step 5: Receiving the NMC Report

Once the Nazarene Research Center has processed your surveys a report will be e-mailed to the addresses listed on the NMCA Account Setup form. Churches that have entered their data online can expect to receive a report within a couple of days. It may take up to 2 weeks for churches that mail in their surveys for scanning to receive their report.

The following is a sample of the report a church will receive: “Sample Report.”

Step 6: Developing a Church Action Plan

Our experience in the UCME department is that without some help and encouragement the local church rarely completes this important step. There are a number of ways the district and local church can work together to develop such a church action plan. While UCME does not provide consulting or a standard way to develop a church action plan, we are recommending the services of New Church Specialties (NCS). NCS has agreed to add the NMCA to their portfolio and can customize their services to your district or churches. NCS services would require a separate contract. For information, please contact Dr. Larry McKain at 816-746-6468 or LMcKain@NewChurchSpecialties.org.
